Grouville
The largely rural parish of Grouville is located on the south-east of Jersey in
the southeast tip, and is dominated by a wide sandy coastline along a stretch of
beach called the Royal Bay of Grouville. The several miles of sandy beach are never
crowded and behind the bay are Grouville Common and the Royal Jersey Golf Club.
The parish was originally called 'Grosville', and is home to oyster beds, the Queen's
Valley Reservoir and the picturesque old village of Gorey, which is filled with
fine seafood restaurants. The Royal Bay of Grouville features La Rocque, the site
of the French landing which led to the Battle of Jersey in 1781, and Mont Orgueil
Castle, widely considered as Jersey's most iconic building.
Grouville Church is one of only two churches in the island with a white spire whilst
the churchyard contains a memorial to the British grenadiers who died attacking
the French rearguard at La Rocque during the invasion of 1781. The ancient passage
grave and Neolithic ritual site 'La Hougue Bie' with its distinctive mound and chapels
are a fascinating attraction and well worth a visit. There is also the Jersey Pottery
visitor centre in Gorey Village where you can watch the pottery being made and decorated
and buy items in the shop.
Here is a list of Grouville attractions:
- Mount Orgueil Castle
- La Hougue Bie
- Royal Bay of Grouville
