Located in the historic harbour area of St Helier and housed in warehouses, the Maritime Museum focuses on Jersey's maritime heritage and experiences of its Islanders. Opened in July 1997 and winner of the 'NPI British Museum of the Year' 1998/99, it is home to hundreds of items relating to the people of the sea, navigation and the elements, both historic and modern. The many hands-on attractions delight visitors both young and old, and with so much to see, do and experience you'll need to allow yourself plenty of time here. In the elements section you can learn, through specifically commissioned interactive exhibits about the tides, waves and wind.
Play with the tidal flow to create the biggest waves, demonstrate the power of the wind on sailing ships and track the voyages of Jersey sea captains across the globe. The boats section allows you to discover the basic principles of boat design and propulsion and before you leave there is the chance to see restoration work being carried out on a historic boat in the boat workshop. The people section tells the human story of the islanders who have spent the last 8,000 years building on their relationship with the sea.
Also located at the Maritime Museum is the Occupation Tapestry, made by the people of Jersey to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of Jersey from German occupation during the Second World War.
